Mr. Willy Sclarsic
Vice President Wingate Health Care
Wingate at Needham is a state-of-the-art, 142-bed acute care nursing and rehabilitative center; one of five such facilities Hammer Design has executed for Wingate Health Care in Massachusetts and New York. Responsibilities included layout, grading, and planting design for the entire perimeter of the site. Although all staff parking is located in the rear of the facility, there are 22 visitor spaces placed between the building and Highland Avenue, from which the site is accessed. Rather than screen the parking with a simple hedge, Hammer Design opted to use a variety of coniferous evergreen materials of different heights, colors, and habits of growth to provide an interesting edge to the property. The top photo illustrates how effectively- yet attractively- a planted screen can hide cars from view. The Gould Street façade of the building (bottom photo) was extremely long, and in order to break up the monotony of such a monolithic appearance, the architects used building panels of alternating brick colors that were slightly offset from each other. The planting design reinforced the linearity of the architecture by placing shade trees and foundation planting groupings in front of each panel, but it also provided- as is visible in the bottom photo- mitigation from the monotony of a long façade.
